Friday Farming tip – WWOOFing

This Friday Farming tip is all about WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) If you are wanting to experience sustainable farming techniques first hand or are thinking of a treechange to the land then a WWOOFing experience may be very insightful and fun.

I found this great you tube clip of a WWOOFer on his first week in New Zealand.

What is WWOOF?

WWOOF is a world wide network of organisations who link volunteers with organic farmers, and help people share more sustainable ways of living.

WWOOF is an exchange - In return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.

WWOOF organisations link people who want to volunteer on organic farms or smallholdings with people who are looking for volunteer help.

What a great way to learn and have a holiday at the same time with you food and accommodation included.

Have you ever WWOOFed? What was your experience?

Please feel free to share about your WWOOFing so others can also learn from your experience.

Passionate about sustainable farming

This week’s tip shows the growing evidence that supports keeping a continuous living cover on the ground to build the soil fertility and supply food to the microbes living in the soil.

Have you used this method? How has it made a difference to your farm?

Treechange or not you can join a Produce Swap

Even if you decide that treechange isn’t for you then maybe you might like to join a local produce swap.

What a great way to become part of creating a sustainable community within your own neighbourhood.

Julietta says “it’s a magical experience”

Why not create your own mini urban treechange and get involved in or start a produce swap.

What else could you do that brings your local community together?

Finding Passion with your Verb

When you are finding passion it is important to find your verb first.

finding passionThe word passion is a noun; however, we are usually “doing” when we are living with passion, which is a verb. I have to thank Alex Mandossian for this insight. It was in one of his courses that he mentioned his view on the verb. He said “people are defined by what they “do” (their verb), not by who they are (their noun)”. Although the verb was mentioned briefly I quickly saw the connection with finding passion.

His formula is simple, you just have to fill in the blank:  “I <Your Verb>, therefore I am.” Continue reading

Finding Passion, Purpose and Direction

finding directionHow do I find passion, purpose and direction?” – Those questions have been asked by many thousands of people… millions and billions of people throughout the ages. We all want a purpose. We want to know why we are here and what we are here to accomplish. We want there to be meaning, feeling and thrill. Ultimately we want to love, be loved and love what we are doing.

If you cannot find your path or direction, it’s simply because one’s path is created, rather than found. Antonio Machado (1875 ~ 1939) expressed this idea, “Traveller, there is no path. Paths are made by walking.” The purpose of life, then, is not to find a path, but to create one. How do you create your life path, purpose, or direction? To begin, start from where you are and understand that everything is already all right. Then forge forward in the direction you choose.

Finding Passion…

Need some help with finding passion? Start with what you love. Who do you love? What do you love to do? What do you love thinking about? What do you love talking about? What do you surround yourself with that you love in your everyday life? What brings you a great feeling?

Think back to when you were a child. What were you good at? What did you want to be that others may have told you “to be reasonable and choose a real job”? The answers to those questions will give you clues to what you are passionate about. They lead you to your Passion. Once you explore what you are passionate about, then you can determine how you can fulfil that passion in your everyday life.

For example, if you love photos. You may find yourself thinking “That would make a great photo”, you love taking photos, sorting photos, scrapbooking your photos, you have pictures all around your home, you love to look at other people’s photos and showing off your own photos. Then photos are a passion for you. Continue reading

Colin’s Family Treechange Success Story

A move to the beautiful Macedon Ranges

picnic rock

1. Can you please share a little about yourself, where you came from and the general area that you have moved to.

A – Born and raised in Melbourne, initially in inner city urban Melbourne before moving out to an atypical Australian upbringing in the Yarra Valley area. Lived in an up and coming suburb in Heidelberg for 10+ years from mid 20’s until mid 30’s. Moved to Macedon Ranges in June 2011

2. How long had you been thinking about moving before you made the change?

A- Not so much a matter of how long, rather than it was always a possibility in my future, given I like to travel and have always admired the way with which country/rural impresses a sense of purpose on the people that hail from any regional area. Early teens, I was fortunate enough to travel with my musical interests to regional areas of Victoria and was “billeted” out to such families that would have a lifestyle that was markedly different to the city. Fulfilment of such was inevitable with the marriage to my life partner in 2006, who originally came from the Hepburn Springs/Daylesford area, where her parents still live. Continue reading

Maybe a treechange is just what you are looking for

I was talking with an old friend this morning and I was reminded how important following your passion is, especially if you are planning a treechange or moving to the country.

I remembered how Jason had inspired me in our late teens when he found out that he needed glasses. It seemed as if his whole world had fallen apart because he knew that he wouldn’t be accepted into the airforce as a pilot.

It’s funny, you may think that you have your life planned out, but, life has a strange way of putting in a road block to help you to evaluate where you are going. Where you think you are going is not always where you need to be!

I am so proud of what my friend has achieved. He is an example to all of what is possible when you don’t let life throw you down. He followed his heart and trusted that life would turn out for the best.

Easter break in the country

easter egg treeIf you are thinking of a treechange or moving to the country why not use your easter break to find out a bit more.

Some towns have easter celebrations or festivals that you can be a part of. Take the time to meet the locals and find out a little more about the town and it’s people.

When making a treechange and moving to the country it is important to see the town during peak season and quiet times as well as in different seasons.

An easter break in the country sounds like a great excuse to do some valuable research for your treechange file if you are thinking of moving to the country.

Have a wonderful easter break planning your treechange. Try some local chocolate for me.
